Harry Gow Tribute

Jan 13, 2025

We would like to start the year with a few words …

Balloch Community Council were saddened to hear of the passing of Harry Gow. We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the Gow family at this sad time.

Many Balloch residents will hold memories of Harry and his family living in Balloch. Some may remember a well earned treat from the bakery van as it drove round the village. For some, it was a visit to the ‘headquarters’ where choices had to be made from the delicious looking cakes on display.

As ‘locals’ move on, there is nothing better than a delivery of Harry Gow goodies by car, boat and even plane to provide a wee taste of home.

In 2017, a small group of volunteers began fundraising to establish a play park in Balloch. Harry Gow and the bakery immediately pledged support, creating a catalyst for other organisations to get on board. By May 2018, the play park was installed and ready to open.

We couldn’t think of anyone more perfect to declare it open than Harry. The sun shone, the community gathered. Harry did the honours, cutting the ribbon to the delight of very many children and just as many adults! A huge Harry Gow cake was expertly served, a mountain of sausage rolls shared and our community celebrated the arrival of a park that has, for very many, become a source of fun, friendship and community.

A true gentleman full of kindness and love for his family. Thank you Mr Gow, your generosity to Balloch will be remembered always.
